ATP production

*quick note: I appologize for missing a week and being tardy and such. This month is not very forgiving for me, so I might not be able to do very well this month.

ATP is the equivilant to gas for cells. Of course gas is expensive. Jsut like ATP. In the production, at least two ATP are needed to produce four ATP, leading to a net gain of two ATP. Of course hten it goes onto the final stage, and it produces a much larger amount of ATP then the preceding two. But then, this take two different forms of resperation. Could humans jsut live off of one form? Well since both forms produces more ATP then it requires, yes, humans could live off of just one form of resperation. It'd be difficult, but doable if humans didn't need to breathe to live. Of course, we do just use one form during exercise, producing plenty of lactic acid, making our muscles sore.

But what about cold blooded animals? Generally found in warm enviroments, cold blooded animals have chemical reactions that happen inside them. Those reactions happen faster or slower depending on the tempature of the creature. Compared to warm blooded creatures, they can be active, or slothful depending on the weather. The still need to breathe as well, but they can be jsut as active, if not more or less, then a warm blooded creature.

Never Believe Anything. Except math and cold hard facts.

"Never believe anything you hear on TV." "Never believe anything you read." "Never believe anything your told." What are we supposed to believe? A question that could plague daily life if left unchecked. It's always odd to see that people go out and buy cleaners tested against the "leading" brand. What brand is that? And if the new leading brand just got beat by the next add, does that mean it cleans any better? Or does it just clean one thing better then other things? The other day I myself almost fell victim to this... pseudo science. After HOURS of looking for a cleaner, I actually found one fully tested against another brand. It was tested against 409. It did much better on light surfaces then 409 due to a bleach content, but not to well against colored surfaces because it would fade the color. Wait, can this be right? A cleaner that was truthful? Well it does in fact exist. It's a restaurant brand cleaner called, go figure, blue cleaner. But then it made me wonder. I had been searching for a cleaner for hours and only found one that provided a believable argument. So then what about those ads? "Take this pill and lose weight!*" 'Male enhancement, CHEAP!*' "Get fuller, more natural breasts in just days!*". Okay, so I got a lot of them from my email inbox. But still they try to provide "proof" that it will work. The foot note of *:claims not tested by the FDA has always scared me away from buying online products. Of course, a fuller more natural body may just be what I'm hoping for, being a six foot tall male of all things. Oh, and foundation, that looks more natural then natural*? Count me in! I really want to glow! *:claims not tested. probably never will be. *:tested against leading brand. Wait what? What's leading brand? two footnotes and how they SHOULD look, but don't. Then there's always my favorite ads, that look like they have curse words for disclaimers.
“Tested against the leading health care professionals!*@#$%^&”*:may cause cancer
@:not a good source of fiber
#:not a replacement for health care professionals
$:not tested.
%:may cause horrible things to happen to you

Nutrition and Society

*A quick note: I appologize for posting late sunday, it unfortinatly has been a very hectic week wiht my sister leaving for ceollege and my gradma packign to move, so I've been helping family almost nonstop.*

Many people have a pantry chock full of quick and easy food. They diet regularly. The drink diet sodas. Is this a good thing? No. Is there anything we can do about it? Yes. Are diets healthy? No.

Many of you are probably thinking if you read that right. Diets aren't healthy? No, they aren't. They dont provide enough calories to the body so it can stay at the correct tempature. Ontop of that, eating less causes your matabilism to slow way down. That in turn cause your body to convert everything it's given into fat, and barely maintain tempature. So you get tired. You get fatt(er). You're grouchy and always hungry. Does that sound healthy? Not to me it doesn't. Probably not to you either. The only true way to get into "shape", is to exercise and use the calories you eat. Then they can't be converted to fat.

Some may say "Changing to diet things that are low carb MUST be good for you." Not necisarily. Take into account, if you will, the shelf life of the item. Is it more then a few days? If so, then it's not naturual. What do our bodies want? Food. Not chemicals. Diet foods, such as low carbs sodas, contain MANY chemicals. Preservitives, Trans fats, oils, even non-dairy dairy extracts. I don't know aobut you, but that seems kinda counter intuitive. The preservitives preserve. So wouldn't they just naturualy preserve the fat on you? And non-dairy dairy extracts. If you take the dairy out of dairy, is it still dairy? Well no, it's non-dairy dairy. It's become nothing but chemicals. Nasty, disgusting chemicals our body doesn't want. So then why not diet to get rid of the fat? Well it's come full circle now. So what can we do to change it?

E*)+(*&%. Wait, exercise isn't a swear word. But it might as well be. It's hard, unenjoyable, and BORING! But it's conditioning. Conditioning our bodies in this day and age need. The food you eat can also be changed. You can eat more vegies and fruits, and prepare your meats differently. But those foods taste blande. Or do they? Think about this. Compare the ammounts of bad things for you in premade seasonings, and the ammoutn of bad things that come from making the seasonings yourself, from fresh, or dried, herbs and spices. A lot of the things in spice mixes aren't needed at all, and don't add anything to the taste. Wth careful preperation and planning you can prepare and enjoy a healthy, and good tasting, meal.

So by dieting correctly, exorcising or muscles, and avoiding so called "diet" foods, you too can get into the best shape of your life. It's not easy, but it's not hard. It's all about getting into a rutuine.

I'm fairly concerned about eating healthy when I can. But gosh darnit hamburgers of all beef cooked in vegetable oil sure do tastes good.

And what about the ingrediants in your cabinet's food? Hmm... popcorn... all naturual, contains butter. Really, that's all i have in my pantry. Well that and cambles preserved soups, but I don't buy or eat those.

Why to avoid transfats: They raise the level of bad cholesterol and lower the good cholesterol levels, leadign ot heart disease.

Blog Post (week of Sept. 1-7)

The definition of life is often defined differently, depending on who you speek to. I myself learnt the deffinition of life to be "The ability to reproduce natuarly and respond to stimulation." In this sense, I am alive in the fact that I can reproduce naturualy with a female of the human species without any outside help. But does this mean machine can one day become "living?" Yes, entirely. If the machine can synthesize molecular compounds without exterior resources or interference, and sitll respond to stimulation, then yes it is living.

Does this definition scientificly encompass all living things? I believe so. I don't think it requires anything other then those two simple things. Birds reproduce and respond to stimulus. Humans reproduce and respond to stimulus. Plants even reproduce and respond to stimulus. Even cells reproduce and respond to stimulus, and cells are considered the most basic forms of life. It fits perfectly.

Do we have to be able to talk to be alive? No, but it certainly helps us who have been taught to speak. Animals do just fine without speaking words, and they are generally accepted as living creatures. Plants do great without a single word. Heck even single celled organisms do just fine.

But then what is defined as stimulation? Heat, energy, food? Yes. They are all stimulation. Stimulation is the introduction of something foreign. Food is from another plant, animal, or source. Water is foreign, we don't make it ourselves. Heat is foreign, it's made by different sources. Yet we respond to all of them. Heat makes us feel something is there. Food is digested and turned into energy. Water is absorbed and used to create and maintain equalibrium(s).

So reproduction would be needed too? What if an animal is sterile? Is it alive? Yes. It's cells are reproducing so it can grow and maintain itself. Remember, animals are nothing more the a collection of living cells.

So does this deffinition need anything else? Well to other people it might, but to me, it is complete in it's entirety.

Chapter 1 notes and answers

It's the beginning of the semister. Hadn't noticed really.

I'm in this class because 1, i like science; 2, it's a subject I need to retake.

Biology is in everyday life. From food, to medicine, to the chemical reactions that make us wonder if we spelt medicine right.

if land based, it will effect them by stopping them easy access to their breeding grounds, if by flight, not at all.

Yes. They're engineered to be safe ot eat. But to much of anythign is bad for you.

Depends. It's to early to say, and it's being atributed ot to many thing, including the sun being more active then ever(accepted in parts of England and surrounding areas), green hosue gases(accepted in USA), and the ozone hole(accpeted various)

Follow englands example and make lighter, more fuel efficient cars as well as short terms ideals while we work on alternative energy.

Bio: life, logia: study (greek roots, I didn't find any latin ones o.0)

another meaning of living: an organism that responds to simuly and occurs naturually.

1. Atoms make molecules, molecules make cells, cells form to make larger organisms, organisms evolve and adapt, but still require basic needs(fuel, food, thing ot convert into ATP)

2. Taken From Wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeostasis)root means greek, homos istemi, to stand equally. It is the property of either an open system or a closed system, especially a living organism, that regulates its internal environment so as to maintain a stable, constant condition.

3. Adaption can be considered developing.

4. ATP is a molecule used by ALMOST EVERY cell in our body. It's an amazing thing that allows us to stay alive at the most basic level.

5. Thus why self aware robots are not living. However this sparks the contriversy of whether or nto clones are living things.

6. Same as grow and develop.

We are alive in the fact that we move, reproduce, and respond ot stimulus. Fire is not alive in that it cannot reproduce or respond to stimulus in an active manner. It also does nto contain any cellular levels, and is nothing but heat at such a tempature that it becomes visible.

Earth, Ecosystem, Animal, circulatory system, muscles, muscle fibers, molecules

watching and learning, asking what is happening or what will happen, presentation of question, what do yo uhtink will happen, steps to test hypothesis, or suppsoed ideas.

a theory is the accepted hypothesis and idea. Theories can be proved wrong still however (theory of the earth being the center of the universe for example). Hypothesis are just presented ideas and are not widely or generally accepted. Theorys are the refined and accepted versions of hypothesis.

it is well thought out and heavily tested.

Checking for accuracy, spreading ideas and theories, and knowledge sharing. Knowledge is power! (TY captain planet.)

so paraphrasing is out?

Also I did this since it doesn't explain how were supposed to turn in homework. or at least it doesn't say any is due.

Hello

Hi, I'm Robert. Well one of them in the biology ten online class. This is hte second intor to biology I have taken. Due to problems iwht the previouse class, I recieved an F in it. Hopefully this will get me past that and fill an IGETC requirement I have for my A.S. so that I can transfer to a four year university for my chosen major, Computer Science. For those interested in studying togethor, I will be in the library on the third floor, near the windows to the left of the entrance when the wireless is working. Untill then I will be in the Dining Area of the mess hall wearing a Hendrix baseball cap that's gray. Feel free to drop by and study with me if you'd like.

I enjoy video games, programming, technology, humor, and company of peers. I also enjoy studying in groups due to the fact that you're not alone and can share ideas and notes. I'm taking fourteen units this fall in the form of a pre calc class, a C programmign class, an English 1A class, and this calss.

I hope to read your posts soon and learn something about you. Hopefully I'll see you in the library or mess hall sometime.

Few rules about commenting:
1. If I'm wrong, point it out politely. We're adults, not highschoolers.
2. If I point out my view, feel free to ask why I look at it this way, but don't just tell me I'm wrong, or that I'm stupid for thinking this, or so on.
3. I don't care about you'r standings in politics or religion, those things aren't related to Biology, at all.
4. I don't like spam. Spam comments will be deleted if posted. This can lead to you not getting credit if you're in the class.
